The whale was a Southern Right Whale (Eubalaena australis), which is a baleen whale. It was slowly migrating through Geographe Bay, which they do this time of the year. They are very comfortable in the bay and also in shallow water, even in the surf. They do travel usually very slow. Southern Right Whales are on the endangered list and are rare.
